Marine and green

In crafts, decor, Etsy on March 18, 2012 at 2:23 pm

A friend recently asked me to make her a coastal wreath like the one  on our front door. My clever husband decided that orange would be a good color for the flowers and I admit it came out quite nicely.

I was actually quite impressed with the way our camera captured this wreath in the warm light of our living room. I also got to thinking about how well terrestrial plants look with marine species, and there are a few items on Etsy that I would love to add to our home. Here are some air plants in sea urchins that Robin Charlotte’s Etsy store makes so beautifully.

This nautilus terrarium is also amazing (from Tall Poppy Gardens on Etsy). Who would have thought calcifying organisms could go so well with green plants?

So there’s only one thing left to add: Connor – go get me some sea shells to turn into miniature gardens!

Miss Congeniality

If there was any doubt that Chloe is the most popular member of the household, there is none now. The other day Shaun and I were walking down the street with Chloe and Connor when someone whom neither of us recognized said “Oh look, it’s Chloe.”

Of course this is not the first time that a stranger seemed to know Chloe by name, it happened before when we used to live in Texas. It could be that we’ve met people who remember Chloe, but whom we have subsequently forgotten, or maybe Chloe does some self-promoting from the window when we aren’t home. Almost all the children in our street know Chloe and come running to pet her if she’s out while they are playing. None of those children know our names, it’s all “Chloe! Chloe!” Fortunately she basks in the attention.

I am sure when we move to Alaska, Chloe will make her rounds so that everyone in the neighborhood will know who she is – maybe some of that Chloe charm will rub off on shy  Connor, who was most recently referred to simply as “the black dog” by our neighbor’s daughter. In the meantime remember this face, folks. She may not be a superstar, but sometimes she sure gets treated like one.

Spring has sprung!

It is Spring in Virginia – and the little purple flowers have come into bloom on our front step.

The weather makes for great puppy walks – as Chloe and Connor can attest to.

Of course, Chloe thinks that bees are far more interesting than sitting still under a cherry blossom tree for pictures.

This picture taken with a view off Center St would have been impossible if any motorcycles or squirrels happened to be passing by.

Job satisfaction

In jobs, life on March 10, 2012 at 10:20 pm

My new part-time job as a dog walker/ pet-sitter has been keeping me pretty busy lately. There have been nice easy days where I can spend mornings at a Starbucks (seen here with Chloe and my good friend Shannon who was visiting from out of town), and there are days when I am on call for 12-14 hours a day.  I highly recommend this line of work for anyone looking to get a little more exercise.

Incidentally, Connor prefers to stay hidden under benches when in public coffee shops.

My husband generously decided that I needed to have some music to listen to while I walk dogs, and he surprised me with a wonderful Ipod nano (which I am still learning to use). So now whether I am walking my clients which has so far included a playful 80-lb doberman, an older spaniel, a boxer puppy, a goldendoodle puppy, a giant English sheepdog, a lab-mix, a dalmatian mix, a whippet, three other mutts and a husky – I can have some tunes.

Luckily my first two weeks of walking have been in beautiful weather, but the greatest part of the job so far has been the job satisfaction. No matter how tired I am at the end of a day, the waggy tails and happy kisses from my canine clients have been a great pick-me-up. At the end of my last pet-sit visit with the husky, she sat facing the floor and just rested her head on my leg. What a love.

I don’t know what’s in store for us a year down the road, but for the moment I think I landed a pretty great part-time job. The only downer being that I need to pile on the ice-cream to make up for all the calories I am burning these days. A tough life indeed.

Chloe and Connor look to see what's on the other side of the bridge.
